Nordic Swan Ecolabelled toys for preschools and schools
The range of Nordic Swan Ecolabelled toys is expanding as Nyby obtains the Nordic Swan Ecolabel for its product range. This makes it easier for procurers and buyers to make safe choices for both children and the environment. Toys are used daily in preschools and school playgrounds, and younger children may even put them in their mouths. In such cases, it is particularly reassuring to know that the toys have met the Nordic Swan Ecolabel's strict requirements for chemicals, materials and safety.
Requiring the Nordic Swan Ecolabel makes it easy for procurers to choose products that have as little impact as possible on children and the environment.
– Purchasing Nordic Swan Ecolabelled products for schools and preschools is not only reassuring for parents and children. It also makes it easier for procurers to set ambitious environmental requirements, while saving time as they do not need to develop the criteria themselves. In addition, the Nordic Swan Ecolabel follows up on compliance, which further streamlines monitoring for municipalities and regions, says Ulf Eriksson, Product Specialist at Ecolabelling Sweden.
Nyby, with production in Gnosjö in Småland, has Nordic Swan Ecolabelled nearly 200 products. The range includes everything from spades and buckets to watering cans and garden tools adapted for children.
– Nordic Swan Ecolabelling is an important goal in our sustainability work. It strengthens our brand and gives consumers and customers a clear signal of our commitment to the environment. At the same time, it serves as a guide in choosing the right toys for younger and future generations, says Eric Broling, Sales Manager at Nyby.
The Nordic Swan Ecolabel sets requirements, among other things, on:
- The environmental and health properties of chemicals used in materials and surface treatments.
- A ban on substances that may cause cancer, damage genes or impair reproductive ability, as well as a ban on heavy metals, fragrances, nanoparticles, phthalates and bisphenols A, B, F, S and AF.
- The materials used. For example, cotton fibres must be organic or recycled, metal materials must contain a high share of recycled metal or metal produced with a lower climate footprint, plastics must be recyclable, and wood must contain a high share of timber from certified sustainable forestry.
- The design of the packaging – as well as the quantity and type of packaging materials.
- Compliance with the conventions of the International Labour Organization (ILO).
- Documentation demonstrating that the requirements of the Toy Safety Directive have been fulfilled.
Nyby’s Nordic Swan Ecolabelled range consists of toys made of plastic; plastic and wood; and wood and metal. The toys are available to both the public sector and private consumers.
