Martin runs for the environment in the Stockholm Marathon
On 31 May 2025, it's time for this year's edition of the Stockholm Marathon. In connection with the event, representatives from the EU Ecolabel will be in Stockholm from 29 to 31 May to showcase environmentally labelled products. EU Commissioner Jessika Roswall, responsible for the environment, water, and the circular economy, will also be participating in the event.

Miljömärkning Sverige's advisor Martin Sjölind is “running for the environment” as part of Team EU, an initiative from the European Commission Representation in Stockholm.
– Running is a sport where you really connect with nature, and it's also an excellent form of transport that doesn’t put too much strain on the environment, says Martin Sjölind.
What does your training look like ahead of the Stockholm Marathon?
On weekends, I go for long runs with great company, and during the week, I do shorter sessions. Intervals and hill training are essential – otherwise the climbs in Södermalm feel overwhelming on race day. Getting plenty of sleep is also key!
What are your expectations for the race?
Mild weather and a cheerful crowd!
In your view, what is the most important issue for the EU to work on? Safeguarding our European democracies through cooperation and shared goals. The EU should serve as a role model for the rest of the world.
Is there something the EU can or should do to take clearer steps toward the green transition?
I always keep an eye on the forest industry and look forward to the day when traceable, wood-based products start to truly replace fossil-based ones. It's also important for the EU to put a stop to greenwashing, so that consumers and buyers can trust environmental claims.
What should every marathon participant do for the climate?
There are many fun road and trail races nearby here in the Nordics. You don't need to fly across the globe to experience a marathon! And you can always ask the organisers to get the race Nordic Ecolabelled. A Nordic Ecolabelled event is a great choice for the environment.
What role does the EU's official ecolabel – the EU Ecolabel – play in the green transition?
You shouldn't have to be a chemist to choose the right shampoo or toilet paper in the store. The EU Ecolabel helps consumers and purchasers make the most environmentally sound choice. Its strict criteria for goods and services are based on a life cycle perspective, assessing and verifying key environmental and health aspects.
