Nordic Swan Ecolabel panels and mouldings for interior use have a reduced environmental and climate impact throughout their lifecycle – and meet strict requirements for recycled materials, chemicals and quality, promoting circular economy.
The requirements include:
- Use of a high proportion of renewable and/or recycled materials.
- Use of wood that is legally harvested and traceable. Furthermore, at least 70% is sourced from certified forestry.
- Environmental and health properties of chemicals used in manufacturing of the product and in any surface treatment. Among others, the use of antibacterial substances and flame retardants are prohibited.
- Limits for emissions of formaldehyde and organic solvents.
- Limits for energy consumption in the production of the product.
- Compliance with harmonised standards in accordance with the Construction Product Regulation (EU/305/2011) or voluntary CE marking according to ETA.
The product group includes interior panels and mouldings, which are typically used in walls, subfloors, ceilings, as well as being used in interior design and the production of furniture. Examples of panels: wood-based panels, high pressure laminate (HPL), compact laminate, cross laminated timber (CLT), glued laminated timber (glulam), composite construction panels, gypsum plasterboard, cement-based panels as well as acoustic ceiling- and wall panels

The licence fee for the Nordic Swan Ecolabelled products is based on their turnover in the Nordic region.

Ecolabelling Sweden AB has no financial profit purpose and is financed through the fees above along with an annual government grant. The company is however liable for VAT according to article 56 of the European Council Directive 2006/112/EC.
Invoicing is made in SEK with the exchange rate from the first banking day of the year.
When both the applicant and the manufacturer are micro-enterprises, the application fee is reduced by 50%. A micro-enterprise is in this context defined as an enterprise with less than 10 employees and an annual turnover (of both ecolabelled and not ecolabelled products) below 2 million EUR.

7.1 ⇛ 7.2: Adjustment of requirement
On 21 January 2025 Nordic Ecolabelling adopted an adjustment in the requirement for prohibited substances (O32), adding an exemption for hardener in 2-component adhesives that replace traditional formaldehyde containing adhesives. The new version is 7.2.
7.0 ⇛ 7.1: Adjustment of requirement
On 15 October 2024, Nordic Ecolabelling adopted an adjustment in the requirement for emission of formaldehyde (O49), adding a limit by test according to EN16516. It has also been specified in requirements for prohibited substances that perfluorinated and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) are not included in the exemption for halogenated organic pigments.
7.0: New criteria generation
Version 7 of the criteria for Panels and mouldings for interior use has been published. The criteria are valid until December 31st 2028.
6.12 ⇛ 6.13: Adjustment of requirement and prolongation of the validity of the criteria
On February 13, 2024, Nordic Ecolabelling decided to prolong the criteria till 31 March 2025. On June 11, 2024, Nordic Ecolabelling decided to make an adjustment of requirement O21 prohibited substances regarding exemption for non-aromatic chlorinated organic compounds used as hardeners in 2-component adhesives also an exemption applies to Trimethylolprepane triacrylate (TMPTA) (CAS 15625-89-5) in requirement O20.
The new version is called 6.13.
6.11 ⇛ 6.12: Adjustment of requirement and prolongation of the validity of the criteria
On 22 August 2023, Nordic Ecolabelling decided to split the criteria into two separate criteria for panels for indoor and outdoor use respectively. The name of these criteria has been changed to 010 panels and mouldings for interior use. Panels and cladding for exterior use are now covered by new product group 114.
The new version is called 6.12 and is valid until December 31, 2024.
6.10 ⇛ 6.11: Adjustment of requirement and prolongation of the validity of the criteria
An adjustment has been made in requirement O21 (ban on the use of substances on the EU's candidate list) where melamine CAS No. 108-78-1 now is exempted. Furthermore the validity of the critieria has been prolonged with 6 months. The new version is called 6.11 and is valid until December 31, 2024.
6.9 ⇛ 6.10: Adjustment of criteria
An adjustment has been made in requirement O19, where resins with melamine are exempted from the classification prohibitions H351 and H361. The new version is called 6.10 and is valid until June 30, 2024.
6.8 ⇛ 6.9: Prolongation of validity of criteria
The validity of the criteria has been prolonged with 12 months. The new version is called 6.9 and is valid until 30 June 2024.
6.7 ⇛ 6.8: Adjustment of criteria
It has been decided to include untreated solid wood and mouldings in similar materials that are included in the product group for indoor use. The new version 6.8 is valid until June 30, 2023.
6.6 ⇛ 6.7: Adjustment of criteria
Requirement O10 on prohibited wood species has been adjusted as have requirements O24 and O25 with regard to the exemption for UV-hardener acrylates. Furthermore, requirement O24 has been adjusted with regard to the exemption for phenol. The new version 6.7 is valid until June 30, 2023.
6.5 ⇛ 6.6: Prolongation of validity of criteria
The validity of the criteria have been prolonged with 15 months. The new version is called 6.6 is valid until 30 June 2023.
6.4 ⇛ 6.5: Prolongation of validity of criteria
The validity of the criteria have been prolonged with 24 months. At the same time requirement O42 Return system was removed. The new version is called 6.5 is valid until 31 March 2022.
6.3 ⇛ 6.4: Adjustment of criteria
An adjustment in O33 regarding TVOC and formaldehyde was made. The new version is called 6.4 is valid until March 31st 2020.
6.2 ⇛ 6.3: Adjustment of criteria
An alternative version to requirements O6 and O7 included in Appendix 10 was introduced. The new version is called 6.3 and is valid until March 31st 2020.
6.1 ⇛ 6.2: Adjustment of criteria
An adjustment in requirement O34 has been introduced. The new version 6.2 is valid until March 31st 2020.
6.0 ⇛ 6.1: Adjustment of criteria
An exemption for bronopol up to 0.05 per cent by weight in requirement O21 has been introduced. The new version 6.1 is valid until March 31st 2020.
6.0: New criteria generation
Version 6 of the criteria has been published. The criteria are valid until March 31st 2020.
