Launch webinar: Protective and absorbant hygiene products

The Nordic launch webinar on the new criteria for protective and absorbent hygiene products was held on Friday 7 November, 2025. See the presentation here.

At the webinar, the participants were introduced to the benefits of a certification with to the Nordic Swan Ecolabel and given a presentation of the new criteria with an explanation of how to get started with the application process.

Whats new in generation 7.0.?

Below you will find an excerpt from the headlines in the new generation of criteria for Nordic Swan Ecolabel protective and absorbant hygiene products, which was presented during the webinar.

The Nordic Swan Ecolabel requirements for protective and absorbant hygiene products include:

  • Renewable raw materials must be traceable, and a high percentage must be certified. Eg. at least 70% of the fibres must come from certified forests.
  • Fluff pulp must be manufactured in a climate and energy efficient way. Fossil oil and coal are not allowed in production.
  • Strict limits on emissions to air and water from fluff pulp and regenerated cellulose – and from manufacturing of reusable menstrual cups.
  • Introduction of biobased or recycled plastics – at least 1-2% - to replace virgin fossil-based plastic in certain products, such as children’s diapers, incontinence care and menstrual products.
  • Biobased plastic must be made from traceable, responsible sourced renewable raw materials – and no palm oil, including PFAD or genetically modified (GMO) plants are allowed.
  • Use of minimum of 35% recycled plastic in plastic packaging.
  • Requirements concerning chemicals that are hazardous to health and harmful to the environment.
  • Children´s diapers, incontinence care products and menstrual products must be assessed for impurities.
  • A ban on fragrances and lotions.
