What is a Digital Product Passport?

The Ecodesign Regulation means that all products covered by the regulation must have a Digital Product Passport (DPP). This means that each product has its own digital identity that describes its environmental performance at all stages of the product's life cycle – manufacturing, reparability and finally recycling. The digital product passports will thus become an important tool for a more circular society.

What information does a digital product passport contain?

The information may include:

  • Sustainability performance
  • Chemical content
  • Where the product was manufactured
  • Warranty
  • Recycling
  • Fitting
  • How to repair the product

The purpose of a digital product passport is to make it easier to check that the product complies with the Ecodesign Regulation, but also to facilitate the repair and recycling of products. In addition, it will be easier to trace any harmful substances and chemicals, regardless of where in the manufacturing chain they have been used.

The Nordic Swan Ecolabel – a tool for more environmentally friendly products

The Nordic Swan Ecolabel reviews all relevant environmental aspects and the entire life cycle in order to set requirements that ensure the greatest possible environmental and climate impact. Our requirements are absolute and specific to different product groups. This means that all Nordic Swan Ecolabelled soaps have met exactly the same requirements.

The Nordic Swan Ecolabel is thus an effective tool for developing products that are among the best in terms of the environment in their category. It also means that companies can use the Nordic Swan Ecolabel to be at the forefront of the requirements that come with the introduction of the Ecodesign Regulation.

Textiles is one of the areas where the Nordic Swan Ecolabel is located that will be the first to offer product passports.

The Nordic Swan Ecolabel monitors and follows the work with digital product passports. We have previously participated in a pilot project, ProPare, whose purpose was to develop a global solution for digital product passports.

The first draft standards for digital product passports are due in 2025.
