Sustainable construction with the Nordic Swan Ecolabel is growing steadily

There are now more than 50,000 Nordic Swan Ecolabelled housing units in Sweden, which is the result of stable growth. Detached house construction stands out with an increase of 14% between 2024 and 2025.

Nordic Swan Ecolabelled construction is increasing despite the crisis in the construction industry. The number of housing units has now passed 50,000 and the construction of single-family houses stands out. A housing unit = a detached house, apartment building, preschool or school.

The new figures show that interest in sustainable construction is well established among consumers, companies and decision-makers. The demand for more energy-efficient buildings, built with healthier materials, is increasing. The Nordic Swan Ecolabel's requirements for buildings are based on a life cycle perspective, and the Nordic Swan Ecolabel is recognised by 98% of Swedish consumers.

– We are pleased with this positive development of more sustainable construction, as the construction industry has gone through a severe downturn in recent years. This shows that more companies want to build with a long-term perspective to meet future environmental requirements and that they use ecolabelling as a competitive advantage. Many licensees have also integrated the Nordic Swan Ecolabel into their business model, says Linda Carnby, Business Area Manager for Buildings at Ecolabelling Sweden.

Buildings can be Nordic Swan Ecolabelled, including apartments, detached houses, schools, preschools and a number of different types of buildings. Detached housing is the fastest-growing segment, with 14% more projects under way in 2025 compared with the previous year.

– The construction of Nordic Swan Ecolabelled detached houses is the area with the strongest growth. It shows that consumers want to make the right choice for the environment and the climate, and that they perceive the Nordic Swan Ecolabel as a credible label, which can also lead to a good investment, says Benjamin Blomqvist, responsible for building statistics at Ecolabelling Sweden.

The number of ongoing Nordic Swan Ecolabelled school buildings has increased, from both private and public sector organisations. This shows that municipalities continue to prioritise sustainability in school environments, despite challenging economic conditions.
