1. Nordic Ecolabel to challenge the art world

Today “Nordic Art Insight”, Nordic Ecolabelling’s art contest, is launched, with a grand prize of 100,000 SEK. Through the contest we hope to raise awareness about sustainable consumerism.

“We want to see artwork that absorb, amuse and worry people. Throughout all times, artists have influenced society and have made people welcome new challenges. Since we miss artists’ voice in today’s sustainability debate, we challenge them to enter our competition. An art piece often says more than a thousand words”, comments, Ragnar Unge, CEO of Ecolabelling Sweden. He continues:

“One of the main challenges of today is how to reach sustainable consumption which considers climate goals as well as a fair distribution of our planet’s resources”.

Apart from creating a piece of art the artist must also, through an environmental perspective, describe how the artwork has been produced to be eligible as contestant. The art piece’s whole life-cycle  is to be described, i.e. raw materials used in the process, recycling etc.

Art students over the 18 years old and professional artists with a place of residence in one of the five Nordic countries are welcome to enter Nordic Art Insight. Entries are to be sent in between March 15th and May 31st. A jury, consisting of representatives from the art world as well as Ecolabelling Sweden, the Nordic Council of Ministers and Umeå, next year’s European cultural capital, will then from all entries choose six finalists which the public will be invited to vote on. The winner will be presented at the Nordic Council of Minister’s conference “Medskapandets konst”, in Umeå in September.
