1. First ecolabel to ban greenhouse gases in TVs and computers

Nordic Ecolabel is the first Ecolabel in the world to demand a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions used in LCD displays. The producer must now reduce emissions of two very potent gases in order to fulfill the new Nordic Ecolabel criteria for TVs and computers.

Producers must clean emissions of nitrogen trifluoride (NF3) and sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), two gases which are gaining popularity in the industry.

"We gradually re-write the criteria and make them more stringent when we come across new scientific evidence. That way consumers can feel confident that they are making a sensible choice when buying a Nordic Ecolabelled product", comments Nordic Ecolabel environmental officer, Ove Jansson.

Nitrogen trifluoride is used in the production of flat screen TVs' and computers' LCD displays. Usage has accelerated since the potent gas has served as an alternative to other gases which are regulated according to the Kyoto agreement. Only recently, nitrogen trifluoride has been recognized by the agreement as a gas whose existence should be reduced.

The external power cable must not contain phthalates - hormone-disrupting plasticizers. Also carcinogenic, mutagenic and substances which are harmful for reproduction are banned.

In order to fulfill the Nordic Ecolabel criteria, computers and TVs must be energy efficient. They must be easy to upgrade, re-use and re-cycle.
