1. Best Western approaching 100 %

The world’s largest hotel chain, Best Western, aims at having all of their hotels in Sweden achieving the Nordic Ecolabel. When the Best Western Capital Hotel in Stockholm recently was awarded the Nordic Ecolabel that ambitious goal is now nearly achieved. 60 of the chain’s 75 hotels in Sweden now carry the Nordic Ecolabel.

These are busy days at the Best Western Capital Hotel in the southern parts of Stockholm. The original name “the Amani” was abandoned in favor of the “Best Western Capital Hotel” a few months ago and the Nordic Ecolabel criteria for hotels has also recently been fulfilled. The green Nordic Ecolabel sign next to the entrance means that the level of environmental work at the hotel is high.

“It took time to replace all the products we needed to in order to pass the Nordic Ecolabel’s standards but now that we are done it feels fantastic”, says Michael Ghneim.

“It has been great working together with the Nordic Ecolabel. The standard of our own environmental work has improved significantly which benefits of course our guests."

The hotel needs to work with environmental issues from a variety of perspectives in order to fulfill the requirements set by the Nordic Ecolabel. For example, the breakfast buffet must contain locally produced, organic and Fair Trade-labelled food. The hotel’s energy consumption must also be reduced, environmentally-hazardous cleaning and washing chemicals also need to be replaced and the waste must be separated and recycled.

The Capital Hotel is the 60th Swedish Best Western hotel to be Nordic Ecolabelled. Another 15 still remain until all of the chain’s hotels in Sweden have fulfilled the stringent environmental standards of the Nordic Ecolabel.

“It is very gratifying that the largest hotel chain in the world considers the Nordic Ecolabel a credible way to communicate its environmental work and that yet another milestone now has been passed thanks to the Best Western Capital Hotel’s passing our standards”, comments Nordic Ecolabel Product Manager, Susanne Hellman.

The Best Western Capital Hotel’s 104 newly renovated rooms are strategically placed in the southern parts of Stockholm near both the Ericsson Globe Arena and the Stockholm fair.
