Our two Ecolabels – the Nordic Ecolabel and the EU Ecolabel

Ecolabelling Sweden's aim is to push environmental developments forward. We wish that products and services carrying the Nordic Swan Ecolabel and the EU Ecolabel shall be forerunners, and be among the best products on the market from an environmental, health and quality perspective.

The superiour vision for our two ecolabels is a sustainable society. Our criteria development process is transparent one, and whenever necessary we consult experts, trade organisations and seek advice from anyone who is interested in sharing their knowledge. We do this in order to ensure that the criteira are as stringent and well-developed as possible.

Both the Nordic Swan Ecolabel and the EU Ecolabel are independent type-1 Ecolabels. This means that an independent external organisation, the Nordic Ecolabelling board, finally decides in all criteria matters. It also means that the criteria are developed from a life-cycle perspective: the product must fulfil requirements during its whole life, from when it's produced until it's recycled. Our criteria are also revised and made even more strict every 3–4 years, thus ensuring that only the products with lowest environmental impact carry our ecolabels.

The Nordic Swan Ecolabel and the EU Ecolabel:

  • Both contain specific requirements for different types of products
  • A transparent criteria process where experts and others are consulted
  • A licence is only awarded to companies which apply for an ecolabel and whose product fulfil our environmental requirements
  • A valid licence in one Nordic country is automatically also valid in the whole region

"The Swan" – the official Nordic Ecolabel

The decision to introduce an official Nordic Swan Ecolabel was made by the Nordic Council of Ministers in 1989. The purpose was to give Nordic Consumers guidance and to help them choose products which had fulfilled strict environmental requirements. Now, criteria has been developed for more than 60 different types of products and services and on the Swedish market alone, there are thousands of products carrying the Nordic Swan Ecolabel.

EU Ecolabel – a European Ecolabel

The EU Commission decided in 1992 to launch a common Ecolabel for the European market. The criteria are commonly developed by the commission's research center in Seville, Spain. The EU Ecolabel is very similar to the Nordic Ecolabel, it is also a type-1 Ecolabel and the criteira are gradually made more stringent.

In Sweden, the same organisation which is responsible for the Nordic Ecolabel, also handles the EU Ecolabel for the Swedish market. Ecolabelling Sweden handles applications and performs on-site audits. It is also the Swedish Ecolabelling board which expresses Sweden's stand in criteria matters concerning both the Nordic Swan Ecolabel and the EU Ecolabel.
