Indoor paints and varnishes 096

A Nordic Ecolabelled indoor paint or varnish is amongst the least environmentally harmful within its product group. The Nordic Ecolabel shows that the product fulfils strict environmental and health requirements.

Indoor paints and varnishes labelled with the Nordic Ecolabel contain less environ-mentally harmful substances and fewer substances with health effects than other indoor paints.

Nordic Ecolabel paints and varnishes are considered to have:
– Strict requirements for solvents (VOC and SVOC)
– Strict requirements for substances dangerous to the environment and for preservatives
– Does not contain softeners
– Quality requirements include coverage

There are 1583 Ecolabelled products from 12 companies within productgroup.
  • Fees valid from 1 January 2021

    Application fee

    Application fee including one on-site inspection within the Nordic region *) 30 000 SEK excl. VAT. Inspection of eight recipes is included in the application fee. For inspection of aditional recipes, 3 750 SEK excl. VAT per recipe will be charged.
    Renewal fee *) 15 000 SEK excl. VAT. Inspection of eight recipes is included in the fee. For inspection of aditional recipes, 1 875 SEK excl. VAT per recipe will be charged.

    Annual licence fee

    Annual Nordic licence fee**) 0.3% of turnover + VAT from EUR 0–30 million 
    0.05% of turnover + VAT > EUR 30 million
    Minimum fee for the Nordic countries 2 000 EUR annually excl. VAT
    Maximum fee for the Nordic countries No maximum fee
    Annual licence fee outside the Nordic countries (for licence holders with a turnover of more than 300 000 EUR of Nordic Swan ecolabelled products, sold outside the Nordic countries) 2 000 EUR annually excl. VAT

     If the Nordic Swan ecolabelled products are only sold outside the Nordic countries, a minimum fee is always charged.

    Fee for extensions/alterations of licence

    Extension/alteration of existing licence Should the extension regard inspection of recipes, which are not already included in the licence, 3 750 SEK excl. VAT will be charged per recipe.

    Other types of alterations will be charged according to how long it takes to deal with the matter:
    - Less than 4 hours: 3 750 SEK excl. VAT
    - Between 4 and 8 hours: 7 500 SEK excl. VAT
    - More than 8 hours: 15 000 SEK excl. VAT

    Fees for on-site inspections

    Extra fee for additional on-site inspection within the Nordic countries 5 000 SEK excl. VAT per visit
    On-site inspection outside the Nordic region, but within Europe***) 15 000 SEK excl. VAT per visit
    On-site inspections outside Europe***) 25 000 SEK excl. VAT per visit

    Euro rate: The exchange rate of the first day of the year is used to convert amounts in Euro to national currency:

    *) Micro enterprises are charged half the fee. A micro enterprise, according to our definition, is a company with a maximum of 10 employees and with a total turnover of €2 000 000 (including both ecolabelled and non-ecolabelled products).

    **) Corporations pay only one licence fee

    ***) There is an extra fee of 1 000 EUR per day if the inspection takes more than one day.

    3.6 ⇛ 3.7: Adjustment of requirements

    Adjustment of the requirements for O3 Classification of chemical substances, O9 Titanium dioxide and O11 Nanoparticles. The new version is called 3.7.

    3.5 ⇛ 3.6: Adjustment of criteria

    Adjustment regarding the harmonization of the reclassification of MIT with the Nordic Ecolabel requirements for preservatives and the applicable exemption for the dispersant trimethylolpropane (TMP). The new version is called 3.6.

    3.4 ⇛ 3.5: Prolongation of validity of the criteria

    The criteria have been prolonged with 24 months and is valid until the 31 June 2023. The new version is called 3.5.

    3.3 ⇛ 3.4: Prolongation and adjustment of criteria

    The criteria have been prolonged with 18 months and is valid until the 31 June 2021. At the same time requirement O6 was adjusted regarding formaldehyde releasing substances and requirement O23 was removed. The new version is called 3.4.

    3.2 ⇛ 3.3: Adjustment of criteria

    Requirement O3, Classification of ingoing chemical substances, has been adjusted. The new version is called 3.3.

    3.1 ⇛ 3.2: Adjustment of criteria

    A change has been made to requirement O7, Residual monomers in polymers in the criteria for chemical building products. The new version is called 3.2.

    3.0 ⇛ 3.1: Adjustment of criteria

    Exemptions have been introduced in requirements O3 and O12. The new version, 3.1, is valid until December 31st 2019.

    3.0: New criteria generation

    The criteria for Nordic Ecolabelled paints and varnishes were published on November 15th, 2015. Version 3.0 of the criteria is valid until December 31st, 2019.

  • We are so happy you decided to send in an application for the Nordic Swan Ecolabel!

    The application process starts by you downloading the application form and filling it in. You then send it to Ecolabelling Sweden.

    We will register your application and send you a confirmation. You will also be assigned an advisor who will help you through the application process.

    During this process, you will send in documentation that proves that your product can successfully meet each of Nordic Ecolabelling’s requirements for your specific product group.

    The application consists of these parts:

    • Completed application form
    • Documentation Overview
    • Documentation showing fulfilment of all requirements according to the criteria document

    Once your product has been approved – not before, you have the right to use the Nordic Swan Ecolabel in all your marketing as long as your licence is valid.
